Apple adding GPS to iPhone?
References to GPS tagging in Apple’s software could point the way to more features for the mythical iPhone.
We admit it’s a long shot, but recent rooting around by Mac fans has unearthed references to GPS data in Apple’s iPhoto software, something we know Apple plans to sync with the iPhone.
Rumaging around inside iPhoto’s code, an ingenious poster on the MacTelChat forums has found references to Google Maps, hinting that iPhoto will soon enable photos to be tagged with location data and plotted by origin.

Add that nugget of information to the code found in Apple’s latest iTunes version, which says “iTunes cannot sync photos to the mobile phone because your iPhoto Library needs updating,” and we could be on to something.
Several Apple fansites have reported that the iPhone will tote a decent camera, as well as sizeable storage, so why not add GPS to that bundle, and sync all the data across iTunes and iPhoto whenever it docks?
Tagging mobile phone photos with GPS seems like a logical idea, and phones like Nokia’s N95 show the extra functionality needn’t add bulk.
It’s not the first hint of Apple-flavoured GPS we’ve heard this year either. Rumour has it the Mac maker has plans for much more in the way of satellite tracking. Imagine your iPod or phone sending out a distress call when it’s been stolen.
Add location data to that distress signal, and crooks will think twice about targeting your latest kit.
