Cingular offers GPS system with 3D moving maps

From Geek.com

Cingular launched a new PDA-based wireless GPS navigation system, which is built upon an enhanced version of TeleNav GPS Navigator and comes with 3D moving maps and "fuzzy search," making it a unique GPS solution among wireless providers in the U.S. "Fuzzy search" is predictive address entry with corrective entry, meaning not only does the software automatically fill in addresses based on current on commonly used addresses, but also it updates information in case it is misspelled.

In addition to the TeleNav GPS Navigator software, the system uses the Nokia E62 device. The Nokia E62 features a high-resolution screen offering 320 x 240 pixels. Besides providing voice and screen directions, the system allows subscribers to locate businesses and the gas station with the lowest gas prices in the area. TeleNav GPS Navigator is available for up to 10 trips for US$5.99 a month or for $9.99 a month for unlimited trips. The subscription includes content updates. The Nokia E62 retails for $99.

Cingular wants a piece of the GPS pie. It doesn't want people to flock to electronic stores to buy new stand-alone GPS navigation system. It'd prefer subscribers to use its service. Considering that service means monthly revenue for the wireless company, it's not in the company's best interest to allow its customers to buy GPS solutions as a one-time purchase.
