Suspected bomb turns out to be GPS on Jeep

From: The Bradenton Herald Today

Tracking device put on woman's vehicle by private detective

GAINESVILLE - A small, black object attached to the bottom of a woman's Jeep prompted an evacuation of a three-square block area early Friday as the Alachua County Bomb Squad checked out the device.

But the object was a Global Positioning System device, said Alachua County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Stephen Maynard.

A temporary shelter was set up at the Queen of Peace Church to house the 45 people who had been evacuated, while authorities investigated for more than two hours.

After learning the woman and her husband were divorcing, detectives learned that the woman's husband had hired a private investigator. He admitted attaching the tracking device to the woman's Jeep, Maynard said.

Bomb technicians used a robot to confirm the box was indeed a GPS, Maynard said.

The names of the woman and her husband were not released.
