Rash of car break-ins, with satellite radio, GPS systems as targets

By: Jim Hague HudsonReporter.com

Weehawken residents are asked to be extremely careful with portable satellite radio and portable navigational systems that are being left inside their vehicles.

There has been a rash of break-ins over the last two weeks, with the thieves targeting cars with either the satellite radio or the GPS systems inside.

On Dec. 13, two cars were reported to Weehawken police as being broken into by smashing a window just 45 minutes and just a few blocks apart.

The first break-in was reported at 4100 Park Ave. at 8:40 p.m. The second was reported on Highwood Avenue at 9:31 p.m. Both cars had windows smashed and portable navigation systems removed from the vehicles.

This follows a reported theft of another GPS system, as well as a DVD player, from a vehicle parked on Liberty Place at 8:25 p.m. on Dec. 11.

Also on Dec. 13, there were four vehicles broken into, all gaining entrance through smashed windows, all within a five-block radius.

At 12:30 p.m., a vehicle parked at 43 46th Street was broken into and a portable DVD player was removed.

Five hours later, just across the street at 30 46th Street, a vehicle was broken into and a Sirrius satellite radio system was removed, as well as an assortment of CDs.

Two hours later, at 46th and Park, another vehicle was broken into with another Sirrius satellite system being removed.

Another was broken into 49 minutes later on Liberty Place, with a Sirrius satellite system being taken.

So it's obvious that the thieves are targeting Weehawken's streets and looking for those particular items inside parked cars.

Residents are asked to remove both of the portable systems when leaving their vehicles parked.
