Rent a Garmin

Navigation Systems

The eight major car rental companies offer them. National and Alamo this month began offering a Garmin StreetPilot c330 system.

Jason Logan, spokesman for Dollar and Thrifty, says the system, which the two companies have been offering since October 2005, has an easy-to-use touch screen and provides information about 6 million hotels, restaurants, gas stations and other "points of interest."

Enterprise last year began renting a Garmin StreetPilot c340 system, which also offers such information.

Hertz last year introduced a new version of its Neverlost system, which, it says, is "significantly faster" than its predecessor. Avis last year unveiled its Where2 system, which, it says, is the first navigation system offering "real-time traffic alerts and Bluetooth connectivity."

Navigation systems "can be extremely important, and a security blanket, for business and leisure travelers who are in unfamiliar destinations," says auto rental consultant Neil Abrams.

Some travelers "may be intimidated by the technology," so most people who rent the systems have them in their own vehicles, Abrams says.
