In the past, Garmin International has told us how to get there. Now the Olathe manufacturer is offering information on cheap places to stay when we arrive.
Garmin on Monday unveiled a new version of its wireless phone navigation service, adding 3-D mapping and discounted hotel room rates for travelers.
The upgrade to Garmin Mobile, currently available on some Sprint and Nextel phones, allows subscribers to the service to customize their routes and find services along the way.
The upgrade was announced as executives of the wireless industry gathered in Orlando, Fla., for CTIA Wireless 2007. The wireless industry’s largest trade show begins today.
Garmin Mobile offers audible turn-by-turn instructions, weather information, traffic information, gas prices and other data through some Internet-enabled cell phones.
The new services allow subscribers to see their route in a 3-D view, similar to that offered by the company’s portable navigation devices. The upgrade also offers information on 70,000 hotels and their rates through Hotels.com.
Garmin Mobile service costs $9.99 a month. A Mobile Lite version, which includes turn-by-turn directions but not traffic, hotel rates and other information, costs $4.99 a month.
