Useable memory on the Garmin X series

From: Groundspeak Forum

Question: Has anyone with a Garmin X series tried to fill up a 1 gig card then tried to fit all that data on a 256meg? Our dealer (who is very knowlegable) says the X units are only capable of using 256megs no matter how big the card.

Answer: The X units can use up to 2GB cards with no problem. When they first came out, cards larger than 256MB were pretty new and Garmin hadnt tested them, so the specs called for cards up to 256MB. Users here report no problem with cards as large as 2GB. But there is a map tile limit. You can't load more than 2025 map tiles to the card, no matter what the size of the card. City Nav NT uses special compression technology to sqeeze more info into each tile to get around this limit, but Topo map tiles are tiny and numerous, so you cant get the entire US onto a card, no matter what the size. Alaska should fit nicely, though.
